A Brief Overview Of A Porn Addiction

In order to understand porn addiction, it is crucial to understand both the term pornography and the term addiction. Pornography, although there can be a lengthy description or explanation for what pornography entails, in simple terms, however, it means any sexual explicit images that can be viewed either in a magazine or on the internet. An addiction can also be described in several different ways, depending on who you are asking, however, simply put addiction is having a continuous participation in an activity or substance, regardless of the negative consequence that may be associated with the activity or substance. Therefore, to say someone has a porn addiction, would indicate the individual continues to view pornographic materials without regard to the consequences that may result from their actions.
The topic of porn itself is typically associated with negativity and those who participate regardless of the degree of participation, are often attached to a negative stigma through themselves or those around them. As a result of the negativity associated with pornography, some people will find they are often judged as being a “bad person” or ‘worthless”. It is partially due to the stigma attached to the disorder, that promotes the secretively of a pornaddiction.
An addiction, is an addiction regardless of what the individual is “addicted” to, however, for someone with a drug or alcohol addiction, though they may be shunned at some point by family and friends, they are often “classified” as an addict, as opposed to being labeled as an addict. What does this mean exactly? Pornography is a secretive addiction, it is easily accessed and in some cases it is easier to get than a substance, but due to the negative stigma attached, someone addicted to porn will be much less likely to seek help, than someone addicted to a substance because of the shame, guilt and stigma associated with the disorder.
The reasons are endless why a person may say they are addicted to porn, ranging from “he’s a man, it’s expected” to “ I am not hurting anyone by looking”. There is a more deep rooted “reasons” however, why someone would become addicted to pornography. The initial viewing of porn, may typically start out of boredom or curiosity and then gradually become a full blown addiction, sometimes without the addict even realizing they have an addiction to porn.
Pornography is a behavioral addiction and the majority of individuals suffering with behavioral addictions, typically have some other imbalance in their life. Addictive behavior is often the way someone will hide the issues that are disorganized or disassociating them from life. The addiction of porn can occur in cycles. There may be several months where he/she visit’s a porn site three times a day and then there are times when the word porn doesn’t cross their mind for months. An addict has difficulties committing to the realization that they have an addiction and difficulties committing to seeking help for the addiction. When the cycle begins, the person falls back into the trap of feeling less dependent on outside help and relying solely on the gratification received from the pornography. The majority of individuals will have cycles that are related to an upheaval or disorganization of some aspect of their life and resort to their isolation with pornography in attempts to escape whatever may have lead them to the isolation to begin with.
Is It Possible That I Am Addicted To Porn
Possibly when of the most confronting questions someone can ask themselves, is “am I addicted to porn”? The most difficult part of finding the answer is, if it is an addiction “how will I known it is an addiction and “how do I quit“? There are several signs that would lead someone to question their actions as being addictive and many of those who display the signs and symptoms may very well be addicted to porn, however, this does not qualify you as falling into the category of a “bad person”, it simply means that as an addict, you are responsibly for finding your way to recovery.
If you are beginning to question yourself as to what is the difference between watching porn and someone being addicted to porn. Asking yourself the following questions will help you to see the difference more clear and to decide if you need to take the next step… finding help for an addiction.
1. Do make every effort possible to access porn on a regular basis? This means do you find yourself rushing home to watch porn at least twice a week.
2. Did you increase your broadband service to better accommodate the porn sites you visit.
3. Do you get less sleep than you should because you up watching porn?
4. Are there other activities that you plan, but find yourself accessing porn instead of participating in the activity?
5. When you originally sit down to access porn, do you tell yourself you will only spend a half an hour on it and end up spending several hours?
6. Do you become anxious and/or depressed if you are unable to have access to porn as often as you would like?
7. Have you become aware of various aspects of your life becoming negatively impacted due to your accessing porn?
8. Are all or some of the relationships in your life being affected due to your accessing porn?
9. Have you ever, or do you currently tell yourself that you are going to stop accessing porn or limit the amount of time you do spend accessing porn sites, then continue to access?
It is not for me to tell you that simply because you answered yes to a few of these questions, they you are possibly addicted to porn. Doing so would only be confirming the stigma that many addicts already have attached. Instead, it would be safe to clarify that if you suspect that you are responsible for answering yes to some of the questions, that you may want to explore options available to you. One of the primary sentences an addict says is “ I am going to quit or I will cut back”. If you feel as though porn may have slowly began to take over your life, if you feel as though you should be spending time on a family activity instead of isolating yourself and accessing pornaddiction, if you feel as though you want to quit accessing porn but cannot seem to find a way and…if you feel as though you may addicted to porn, it would be beneficial for you and your happiness to explore why you may prefer the isolation and why you may feel depressed or angry and why you may want to consider, just consider seeking help.
